Question

I have a 98 nissan altima, when I try to start it i get a loud grinding and winding noise and it usually takes two or three tries to start up. I notice my lights and everything dim when I'm doing this. What could potentially be causing the grinding and winding? what can i do to make this noise go away. It seems like the engine sounds dry and also doesn't seem to want to turn over.
