Question

this is a manual transmission 2000 ford focus. it starts out fine in first gear, and gets through second gear without any jerkiness, but third through fifth gears it jerks under acceleration until i start letting up on the accelerator. once in fifth, it moves along fine unless i push hard on the accelerator and it starts jerking again. it doesn't act like it is going to stall out though.

Sounds like ignition trouble to me. First thing to check is the plugs and plug wires. If it has high milage I would replace the plugs and wires. There is a test for the wires. They are good as long as the resistance less than 1000 ohms per inch of wire. If this doesn't fix it the coil could be the problem. It should have 12000 to 15000 ohms of resistance on the secondary side and 1 to 10 ohms on the primary side. Is the check engine light on? It should be if it is missing that bad. Let me know if you have more questions.
