how do i get a credit report without having a credit card?

whenever i see a "free credit report" link it isn't really free exactly. they always want a credit card which i won't have for any reason and if i did why do they require such a card if it's free. because they want to charge you after the trial period. well it seems to me that they should back their offer and not extend my account past the free trial.
