Question

My BMW 740i has a coolant reservoir problem...the coolant evaporates while parked after driving the car for a couple of hours. Is the problem with the cap or could there be a slight fracture in the reservoir?

Answer

If there is no coolant on the outside of the reservoir it's not evaporating but the cap is pulling coolant back into the radiator. This is normal if the radiator is low on coolant. I would check the coolant level first in the radiator then visually check the cap and see if it's intact where it seals. If the rubber looks old/cracked/falling apart then replace it and recheck for your symptoms.

I fill the reservoir each morning and each afternoon driving to/from work. There's a little coolant remaining in the bottom of the reservoir..however, the reservoir must be filled daily. Furthermore, the temperature gauge should be in the center and it drops in to the blue area and rises slowly. Could this be attributed to the cap, or, could there be another problem?

Accepted Answer

It could be the cap and the cap is easy to replace. I suspect you had a air pocket or something when you changed the coolant and the radiator is low on coolant. Since it low when you stop and it cools down the coolant in the reservoir is sucked into the radiator.

Answer

Another expert has mentioned to me that the reservoirs on your model have been known to have problems where they leak. Does the reservoir look bloated?
