Question

Since I bought my 2003 Chrysler 300M new, there has been an odor whenever I use the front defroster. The dealership claims they don't smell it. I even paid to have the radiator system flushed which made no difference at all. Any ideas?

IMPORTANT: I want to make it clear that this is NOT a mold/mildew smell. It is a chemical kind of odor. Dealer insists there are no leaks.

Answer

Good Morning!

The air-intake is located just below the windshield outside of the vehicle. It is possible that something could have either spilled in that opening or some kind of chemical was used on the exterior of the vehicle got in there. Try running the system without circulating outside air, this would limit only the inside air to circulate through the system. It may help to determine whether this problem is internal or external. You also have the option of adding a "little amount" of deodorizer" in the air-intake to absorb whatever the smell is.

I have seen heater boxes in the past repaired with different glues or epoxies which lead to problems like this as well. If you're not the original owner there is a possibility that some kind of repair was made with a substance that has this lingering odor.

Good Luck!

Reply to Dan's Post: I bought it new and it has been a constant problem so I doubt it could have been a spill.

How can you run the defroster without circulating outside air? Does the recirculate also work with the defroster? Thanks.

Accepted Answer

There is a setting that normally displays a picture of "arrows" that either indicate movement of inside air or outside air. This would be the place to make the adjustment. If there is anything at all that is leaking or has a smell to it under the hood it will get "sucked" into the system and circulate in the car.

Answer

I did have the a odor in my 2006 Toyota, it smelt like kerosene but it did go away. Anything that could be "vaporizing" or "overheating" could be moving through the system.
