Question

I have a 12 year old maltese that has been diagnosed with IVD? He is sitting with his 2 back legs in front of him so I know that the disease has seriously progressed. Surgery was not an option due to the cost so they started him on Steriods and Tramidol for pain.   Do you think that there is any chance that he will get better or am I putting him through needless pain?

Answer

Hi XXXXXX,

Some dogs respond to simple rest, anti-inflammatory agents and muscle relaxants.

I don't know how bad his progression is, and in what physical state he is in currently so it's hard to say. - See how things go in the short-mid term, and if he gets worst, then make a decision at that time.

I'm sure financing is available where you are and probably even at the vet's office, if immediate full payment is not an option.

Here's a link with more information on this:

Hope this helps!
