Question

I have a Maltese dog, 3 months old, who is losing his hair on his feet and tail. He also has itching in those areas. What could be wrong with him???? I'm worried he will keep losing all his hair. The vet said it could be an allergy so we changed his food and shampoo. I'm just afraid to keep waiting and have him lose all of his hair.

He started with Science Diet Puppy small bites and the vet swithed him to Lamb Meal & rice recipe/PUPPY. I just looked at the contents and this one says in the engredients "Corn Gluten Meal"

Answer

Dear frien,

Science diet is not a good food for your baby. Vets push it because they sell it but many dogs have allergies to grains like corn and gluten. There are many great natural foods that a maltes will thrive on and his coat will look beautiful. Look at the ones on www.petfoddirect.com or try canidae wellness or neutro. You cab also make homade food and freeze it www.pet-grub.com

In the meantime feed your baby boiled chicken, cottage cheese or baby food meat with no onion untile you find a quality food for him.

Maltese have very sensitive skin so you should only use a soothing oatmeal shampoo. No flea dips or sprays or harsh products, Monitor what the groomer uses on him as well. He should also get a daily vitamin with omega 3 fatty acids.

Please let me know how your baby is doing and if you have further question I can help with,

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

I have a couple more questions:

Can I be sure the problem for his loss of hair is from his diet???? could there be any other reason for this??? if it is the food and I get him the right food, how long will it take for me to see a difference, and will his hair grow out normal again?

Thanks so much.

Answer

Dear friend,

When a baby his age has such skin issues it is almost always related to diet or shampoos which have caused an allergic reacton.White dogs have very sensitive skin. I had a little girl maltese for 15 years that would blow her entire coat if even ONE flea bit her.I have a feeling that these issues are more related to what the breeder was feeding so follow the recomendations in my above answer. As far as when you wil see a drastic change, it could take two months because your baby will have to regrow his coat from scratch. It should however grow back normal and beautiful.

Please let me know if you have any further questions about your sweet baby. I will always be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
