The pip signal originates with the pickup assembly in the distributor. In laymans terms it is the signal the pickup gets when the odd vane comes by the pickup and designates #1 cyl. for the pcm so it will know which set of injectors to fire. The pcm fires 4 injectors at a time but depends on the pip signal to designate which set to fire. The pip signal processes through the thick film ignition module to get to the pcm, so either part could be the problem. basically was considered a misfire code before we added the crankshaft sensor which now can narrow down which cyl. misfired.
The code can be generated by a misfire, but was not as sensitive to misfires as the crank sensors, so it usually is a module or pickup going bad. If the tfi module on the distributor was recently replaced , check to be sure dielectric grease was liberally applied to the surface that contacts the distributor. If it hasn't been replaced, replace itwith a good quality module and when you unplug it from the pickup look at the terminals. If you see green corrosion you will need to replace the pickup also.
I hope this has helped, if so please accept, if not reply.
