It is my husbands truck, stuck in ST.Louis, trying to get back to Ft. Hood, off of leave, home from Iraq. The truck is a 94 Ford, extented cab, F150, dual tanks, I don't know the engine size. He was driving along, the cruise control kept going off, then when he stepped on the gas the RPM's would go up, the engine was still on but it would not go foward. He has stopped at a service station, but it will be a couple of hours until they can get to look at it.

Info Request

Hi there.

Lets have him check the basics first.

With the engine running have him check the transmission fluid level, it should also be a bright pink color and not have a foul smell to it. My guess is that it is either low on fluid or the fluid is burnt form the transmission overheating, and will not go into gear when this happens.

Let me know what you find please.

The transmission was just flushed about a week ago. When he stopped to get it checked out, they couldn't find anything wrong. The engine light did not come on. They did add transmission fluid, as it was low. It still is 'slipping' gears, and he doesn't know why. He stops occassionally to let the engine cool down and then it is fine. But, he has to stop, and with the weather being bad, he is afraid that it will cause problems, and leave him stranded.

Accepted Answer

About all he can do is keep an eye on the fluid level to make sure it is not leaking out. Also make sure the engine oil and coolant are full, so as to not add more heat to the transmission.

I dont know how long it will last though, it sounds like the transmission is on it's last leg, tell 'em i'm pulling for him.
