Question

I have a 1997 Caddy Concours. I changed the brakes and rotors. After I was done changing the breaks and rotors, I dumped the brake peddle a few times to reposition the rotor pistons. On about the third dump the anti-loc brake light came on and the traction control dumby light came on. The brakes work perfect but I need to know how to clear the anti-loc brake light and traction control dumby light. They remain on and the car always starts out in second gear because of the tranction control dumby light being on.

Answer

With out having the vehicle put on a diagnostic machine you will not know what the actual problem is. I recommend you remove the negative battery cable for 30 minutes this will clear all codes and faults until they reoccur even if they will

Reply to Chris (Moose)'s Post: Disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes was the first thing I did before I asked for help, so I don't think that answer is worth anything.

The Anti-Lock Brake Light and Traction Control Dumby light didn't seem to be affected (reset)by disconnecting the battery. I know you can access the computer codes by utilizing the heating/cooling control buttons so I thought there was a specific reset sequence I had to follow.

The brakes are working abosolutely perfectly, so I can't see how I actually broke something in the anti-lock braking system. The problem occurred when I pumped the break pedal to reposition the calipar pistons after they were compressed to change the pads.

Answer

I have never had a problem where I just replacced the pads and the rotors and the traction control and ABS where then inop and false activating. I suggest you ga back over your repair and make sure you did not damage any of the abs sensors or tone rings. When you disconnected the cable and then drove the vehicle. Then the ABS and TRAC malfunctioned again that means you have ahard fault which is occuring and that moment.

I never even drove the car, I just started it and the anti-lock light and traction control dumby light never turned off, that is why I didn't think I reset this system.

When I changed the pads, I didn't have to touch any of the ABS sensors (I think). I did inspect all the senors and they look intact. The anti-lock light was off initially after changing the pads but came on after the first soft brake pedal compression after changing the pads. I don't know, could that have broke something in the ABS system?
