Answer

Hello brunette,

Soda is basically sugar water. You can grow sugar crystals in it using the technique below

  • Attach a paper clip to a piece of dental floss [dental floss won't absorb water so it will stay 'clean']
  • Tie the other end to a rod / pencil
  • Place the pencil across a glass with the paper clip hanging inside as low as possible without touching the bottom
  • Fill the glass with soda
  • Leave in a warm place (e.g. top of the hot water cylinder) for a few days and check the crystals every day.

To grow a crystal without a paperclip in the middle pour some soda into a clean evaporating dish and leave in a warm place for a few days.

When a small crystal has formed this can be tied to the string and hung in a cup of concentrated soda. The soda needs to be saturated or it will redissolve the soda. To make saturated soda, leave the soda in an evaporating dish until small crystals form.

Sugar crystals are not technically crystals as their structure is not regular. But they do taste nice.
