Question

I recently rebuilt a Chevy 327 engine from the ground up. Upon trying to start the engine for the first time, I found that I have completely no compression. What could be causing this?

How did you set up your timing chain and gear markings?

Reply

No chain used, gear-driven instead. The CAM dot down, crank dot up.

How far down did you crank the rocker arm nuts?

To top dead center. Rolled motor until exhaust valve was completely open and set the rocker arm to zero lash and tightened a half turn. Etc. with all the others.

This has me just stumped........

Accepted Answer

So all of the rockers were adjusted when the cam lobes were at their lowest point of contact with the rocker...right...

If so that only leaves the lifters pumping up too much or the rings aren't seating.

I would try setting the rockers at 0 lash and tighten them fully after it is started, if that dont do it......well you guessed it.

Give the rocker adjustment another shot, just make sure the cam is at its lowest point on every valve you adjust.

If you have further questions on this, just reply.

Thanks for asking!

Reply to Virtual Wrench's Post: I have set the rockers at .005 lash and .0010 lash in addition to zero lash. If the rings didn't seat, wouldn't there be a little bit of compression? I just don't get it?????

The only thing left is the valves aren't seating....did you have the heads reworked?

I mean really...there are only a very few things that are needed for compression.

If the rings are sealing....and the valves are adjusted and seating..........all that's left is the timing........

Are you sure you didnt get a defective miskeyed cam or crank gear?
