Info Request

I can definitely provide you with an answer, if you give me just a little more information -

How old is you kitten?
Is he being treated for an upper respiratory infection?
How often does he sneeze?
Does he come from a shelter or other rescue situation?
Is he current on vaccines?
Has he been tested for FIV/feline leukemia?

His problem may be normal, but I can't tell for certain with the info you provided. I'll get back to you with an answer once I have the additional info.

Reply to Dr. Olivia's Post: He is 3 months old and came from animal control a week and a half ago. He got shots at that time he sneezes on and off throughout the day. We also adopted a dog at the same time who was sneezing for about 3-4 days after we adopted him. This is not all day and it is not a runny nose. He seems to start to sneeze and then we see the blood in the clear watery fluid.

You're kitten most likely has a herpesvirus infection. This is one of the most common causes of a cold in cats. It is extremely common in cats that come from shelters as it is nearly impossible to eradicate in this environment. Once a cat catches it, they are infected for life - however, most cats rarely have more than one or two outbreaks past kittenhood.

With chronic sneezing of this nature, kittens can often burst tiny blood vessels in their noses and you will see blood, mixed with clear mucus, spray out of the nose. Do not be alarmed, this will resolve once the sneezing clears up.

Monitor your kitty for any decrease in appetite, and make sure the nasal discharge is either clear, or as you have described it. Should it turn yellow or green, then your kitty has a secondary bacterial infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics. If you notice any pinkness or swelling around the eyes, then he should see a vet too.

The herpes infection will run its course, however, you can shorten the duration and intensity by giving your cat a supplement called lysine. You can get this at any health food store, and even most pharmacies. Your kitten should be given 250 mg once daily for 1-2 weeks.

Herpes outbreaks are brought on by stress - so most cats, once they are adults, will only show signs when something has changed in their environment.

The feline herpes virus is not the same thing as human herpes. It is not contagious to you, and it is not contagious to your dog. Your dog may have a condition known as "kennel cough" which may be passed to your kitten. If you notice coughing from either the dog or the cat, see your vet for antibiotics right away.

I hope this helps. Happy New Year,

Dr. Olivia
