Question

A small puddle of water backs up into our dishwasher from the drain line. The drain line is attached to the disposal. I would think that there is a check valve on the dish washer to prevent this and it is leaking. I am thinking about adding an inline check valve on the drain line either right after the dishwasher or right before the disposal. the diswasher is a couple of years old but probably has only been used a dozen times. Could anyone help?

Answer

If you plan to install a check valve it should be just after the dishwaser. A check valve after the disposal would only help if you were having problems with the dishwasher backing up into the sink.

Answer

Right before the sink would be the better choice. It would keep debris, from the sink, from collecting in the line running to the dishwasher

Answer

I can't say that I would know if there were a check valve in a dishwasher and that it would be of any help for backups in that the garbage running through the line would tend to collect on the check seats and then leak.

I take a stab here and say that there is no check valve and that the dishwasher is designed to tolerate some backflow as in a washing machine but you might have too long a drain hose or a dying dishwasher pump.
