Reply to Lurch's Post: I have a 1949 Chev 3100 pickup. there is a much newer 6 cyl engine in it. must be a 230 or 250 cid. I did research on the net how to look up the engine size from the block numbers but nothing matches what i have found on my engine (6 cylinder engines are stamped with the Engine Code Stamping Numbers on the passenger side of the block behind the distributor).

I would like to set the timing but don't know the degrees to set -+ the mark. as in 10 degrees btdc?

Accepted Answer

Timing is 4 degrees B.T.C. on both, but Not knowing the Year & Correct size, that is what the book shows for most 70's........

It would be best if you would get the Numbers:

Relist:
CE1A00343 is stamped clearly on the pad, but is no match to anything I have found. There is a casting clock on the block signifying Saginaw, I understand. Could you tell me if this is the correct # and what engine this is, mfg date, etc?

Answer

You are Correct that the Number does Not match most 6 Cylinder numbers, but the 00343 leads me to believe it is a Crate Motor from GM Parts............
I can Not be absolutely sure, but that is what I come up with.
