Hi,

A three year old hamster is considered very "senior". It may have a tumor or other neurological problem that is causing the falling. It could also be off-balance for other reasons. Not eating and drinking is a very bad sign.

Unfortunately, being able to diagnose problems in hamsters is difficult. Not only are they extremely small, most tests cost about as much as for dogs and cats.

I would recommend taking your hamster to the SPCA near you and having it put to sleep. They will most likely do it for you for next to no charge. I haven't heard of a clinic around me that charges $100 to put a hamster to sleep, we usually reduce the charge for rodents. I would also call around to other veterinary clinics in the area.

I am sorry about your hamster. I wish you the best.

Sincerely,
