Christmas was started by the Roman Catholic Church as a response to the Romans celebrating the sun God on December 25th. Up until that point Christ's birthday was not really celebrated (it is actually in the Spring!). In an attempt to wipe out the Pagan holiday Christmas was created. This was about AD 274.
Santa Claus was a part of Christmas that was added and is based off of Saint Nicholas who delivered presents to children.
