I have a 1999 blazer with the 4.3 V6. With 4 people in the car I pushed it hard and accelerated to around the limited speed of 95mph. It kicked down to 2nd or 3rd gear, im not sure, and redlined, before backing down to approx 4,500 rpm. It stayed pegged there for a good 3-4 seconds before dropping back into 4th gear (despite having totally released the gas) at that point the "service engine soon" light illuminated and has been on ever since. Also, it smelt like smoke for about 5 minutes thereafter and while accelerating, it sounds as though the muffler is damaged. The oil is fine and the truck didn't overheat, the engine still accelerates fine...what could be the problem?

Answer

First thing to do is scan the computer for codes. Most major part stores do this at no charge. Remember the numbers they give you. From there I can figure out what direction to go in. The fact that the check engine light is on means there is a code stored. Check around the air pump lines to see if one has come off or a hose failure has occured. That would sound like a bad muffler and possibly set a code. Let me know what you find.
