Question

I have a 2003 Buick Rendevous CX (FWD) with 55k. During recent stop and go driving, the engine temperature runs much hotter than normal (50-60% of gauge). During highway driving the temperature remains at normal levels (25-40%) of gauge. I have a noticable (regular) leak of anti-freeze under the car. I have heard the Buick Rendevous engine has a history of head gasket issues or maybe a water pump leak. Any thoughts?

I believe it is the 2.4 L engine

Sorry, I thinking to small it is probably the 3.4 L V6 not 2.4L, but you probably knew this all ready.

The 2003 Buick Rendevous only came with the 3.4L motor. Is it a V6? I know the common failures for these motors, I'm just trying to get my information straight!

You have any suggestions or recommendations reagrding the issue. I need to drive it for a couple days for work then I can have it repaired.

Accepted Answer

Yeah. There's a few common failure points on these engines. The most common is the lower intake manifold gaskets. The water pumps also fail pretty commonly. Can you see which side the motor the coolant is leaking from? That would also give be a better idea of what you are looking at.

The leak is on the drivers side. In fact, if I am looking at this correctly under the car, it seems the leak is coming from the seak on the pump ? on the engine block....

What is typical cost estimate for replacement of a water pump in labor (hr) and parts?

Answer

All can tell you is to make sure you keep the coolant filled (over fill the reserve bottle, too.) If you know you have a coolant leak, the temperature will run hot. There's no way around that. You need to have pressure on the system to keep the coolant boiling point lower. With a leak, you won't get the needed pressure.
The head gaskets aren't a real common failure on these motors. However, they will easily fail if the motor is overheated. This is very common. Your leak can be coming from many different places. The more common failure (often mistaken for head gasket failure because the coolant will mix with the oil) is the lower intake manifold gaskets.

You can try to add coolant stop leak to the system. Bars makes a decent stop leak that will slow the leak down until you get to a repair shop. Just make sure they flush the cooling system out when the repair is finished. This stuff can sometimes plug up radiators and heater cores if left in for long periods of time.
Other than that, just watch your coolant level and keep the temp gauge low, otherwise head gasket failure will most likely occur. If you aren't burning coolant, or misfiring real bad, don't let a shop sell you head gaskets, even if the coolant is in the oil!

Water pump is about $75 and 1.5 hours labor to replace. I can't give you a good labor cost, because the labor rates vary from shop to shop. The water pump is on the passenger side, though, not the driver's side.

Tiger,

Thanks!! This is exactly what I needed to know. I had a shop try to sell me a head gasket repair several months ago and it actually turned out to be a leaky temperature probe which was a couple of turns with a deep socket. This fix may actually be the initial issue since the pressure in the coolant increase after I fixed the temperature probe leak, it may have caused the water pump seal to start leaking...???

I probably need to get the pump and seal replaced and this should do the trick. I have been keeping the AF filled and monitoring the situation daily. Thanks for you assistance.
