Hello,

I would suggest,
Unplugging the external drive,
Power it off,
Reboot the computer,
Plug it back in (TO A DIFFERENT USB PORT) and
Power the drive back on.

Also make sure it is NOT connected via a USB HUB, as this can cause problems.
