Hi! I have had horses for over 40 years. This is a common problem for first time foals. You mare is not getting enough bulk and protein to nurse and keep her weight up. This is not my favorite grain for mares but it is okay. You need to double up on it and add at least one more flake of hay to her diet each day. Also add 3 tabls. of wheat germ oil or VERY high quality corn oil. Check her coat to see that her skin is not dry and flaky. Check her eye lids to be clear and clean. Her nose should be clear as well. Check she manure for undigested grains and have her teeth floated if this seems to be a problem. Having a foal is high stress, so she needs extra rub downs, soft cloth massages and quiet time to make good milk and not be overwhelmed in a crowded or high traffic area. If she feels her foal is threatened, she will burn off many calories in defense mode. Over handling of the foal can also stress her out. She protective instincts keep her awake more and on guard so she will also burn off more calories. Adjust her grain, add supplements and oil. Don't be afraid to give her treats of carrot and apples to increase antioxidents and give her extra energy from the natural sugars. Beet pulp is also a nice addition if you can get it. If you have any other questions, please ask. I will help you in andy way I can.
