Question

I'm interested in purchasing a mixed breed dog, specifically a Morkie, and wanted a recommendation for a breeder. I live in NJ and would like to deal with a breeder that I can drive to for the puppy. Can you provide any insight?
Also, in regard to health issues, what is your opinion on a MORKIE mix breed or any mixed breed s for that matter?

Thank you,
Nicole

Answer

I'm guessing a Morkie is a maltese yorkshire terrier mix.
Its really hard to find a responsible breeder who breeds mixes. Most just produce pups for profits and could care less about anything such as health testing the adult dogs before considering them potential breeding stock etc.
Mix breeding does not eliminate hereditary issues in health or personality. Some breeders will try to tell you that 'hybrid vigor' fixes all that but if you breed two dogs with bad knees and bad eyes and back problems the pups are apt to have them too.
So knowing the health issues in each breed and seeing if the breeder has tested for them before breeding would be a good choice.
Here is a list of yorkie health issues

and maltese problems

If you want a cute little mixbred dog I see no reason to purchase one from a breeder who is just breeding to make money. You can likely find one in a shelter near you that needs a home. www.petfinder.com may help you locate one.
Look under yorkshire terriers or maltese or just under dogs small using their search engine. Click on the picture preview and you will be able to see a picture along with the listing.
I even saw yorkie maltese mixes listed.
Hope this helps you!
