Answer

Hello, my friend,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!

Also, I can help you with any of your "horse related" training issues. Send them to Just Answer to me: Just Ask Tammy.

From the symptions and description of the discharge (yellowish) of your horse's eye, you are dealing with an eye infection. This does require vet care in order to obtain the correct antibiotic for the eye infection.

In the meantime, you can clean the eye with a soft cloth and warm water to keep the area around the eye from matting. You can also do two other things to help until your vet gets there. First use "Clear Eyes" (only for horses-you can get at most pet/feed stores) and clean the out out . Second, I would suggest putting a "fly mask" on her to keep out debris and insects.

I would not self-medicate the eye with any ointment that you may have on hand, as it possibly could be out of date and not be effected and/or could contain steriods that she may not require.

I hope this helps. If you need further information please feel free to contact me.

Answer

Hello,

The information I gave you is what I would do while waiting on the vet. I wouldn't use any ointments in the eye until your vet prescribes the appropriate one.

For now:

Clean the eye with a warm soft cloth (Re-apply and hold on eye for the swelling)

You can also give her 2 tabs bute per day (soak in water and add to grain) to help with the swelling.

Clear out eye with "Clear Eyes" (you can get at any feed/horse store)

Provide a fly mask to keep out debris and insects.

More than likely as I had indicated, I do believe she has an eye infection which can be cleared up quite easily when cleaned and medicated with an antibaterial ointment your vet will prescribe. It is always a good idea if you plan to keep the ointment, label it as to whether it is a sterioidal ointment or not. You can keep the anitibacterial (normally non-steroidal) ointment for possible future outbreaks.

Your vet may want to put her on SMZ's, Tuperin or another oral antibiotic that you will put in her feed.

I hope this helps. If you need further information please feel free to contact me.
