Question

My schnauzer has a large round circle on his shoulder where he has lost all of his hair and their are black spots apparent, and in some places he has little bumps. Is this Black Skin Disease, if so what needs to be done?

Answer

Hi Hrdawg,

It is more likely to be one of the common reasons we see hair loss in dogs instead of alopecia (black skin disease). It could be ringworm, mange, or possibly an allergy. Treating any problem without knowing for sure what it is causes a delay in the treatment of the real problem if your first guess is wrong. I really suggest you have your Vet examine the areas and diagnose this. Below are websites on Ringworm and mange that will go into more detail on these conditions.

Here is a website on Ringworm:

Here is two on Mange.

On Alopecia

Hope this helps.
