Question
Hello, my cat Xena is 11 1/2 years old. She had a large mass removed from her intestine and was diagnosed with HIGH STAGE FELINE LYMPHOMA. My vet said the prognosis was "garbage" and the lab report stated "prognosis poor". I visited a holistic vet that has given me some vitamins/immune boosters to give her, and I also visited an oncologist who thinks we should try chemo. I have read on other websites cats are in pain after their treatments and have reactions vets don't tell you about. Should I go the chemo route? Would chemo be worth it for a cat with high stage feline lymphoma? Thank you for any advice you could give. --Annie

Answer
I will say this at the beginning- its terrible to hear this news about one of your own 'furry kids'. She is a bit elderly to want to put her through the stress of chemo...but how is her health right now? Is she in visible pain? I had Twilight, my baby (cat) of 10 years, put to sleep after a tough battle with cancer. She had a tumor on her spine and we went the chemo route for a while. Looking back, I wish I had not... but I was young and thought everyone could win against cancer if you tried hard enough. My honest suggestion would be to let her enjoy the life she has left and enjoy her time left without going to chemo. I have had to have pets and human people go through chemo and the result is the same... prolonging the pain. What I ended up doing with Twilight was accepting the steriod meds for her (it made the tumor swelling go down to where she could walk/eat/ect normally) and forgoing any more chemo. It made her so sick and looked so miserable...she started trying to attack her brother (same litter, had been together since birth) like he was a stranger. She would bite me and anyone else... not because of a personality thing, but it hurt too bad after a while. The steriod meds worked for a couple of months but after that, when the tumor made her unable to have any 'good days', we went ahead and had her put to sleep. It is a personal call of quanity of life vs quality of life. Just as an fyi, not attempting to be disrespectful of your oncologist, but it *IS* financially advantageous for them to tell you that chemo treatments are the way to go. But it truely is a personal call.
