Traditional American Indian headdresses were used for symbolic purposes. Larger headdresses represented a higher socio-cultural status. All the trappings used in making these headdresses were also symbolic of the season and many other aspects of their society. In addition to symbolic meanings, the feather headdresses were used to shelter the wearer from the weather.
