Sony Super Trinitron

I have a Sony Super Trinitron 28". It has turned itself off to standby. When I press eg channel 1 on the remote this should switch the TV on however it just clicks then clicks back to standby a second or two later.
It has come on once since this problem started and the picture was perfect as normal, however it turned itself off after about a minute.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Reply to glenn's Post: thanks for your reply, however, there is no chance of going into the menu as the tv will not switch on ie no picture and no sound. all i have is the red light at the bottom next to the on/off switch.
