Question

I am 2 days late and bleeding brown blood its very dark and thick. I am also burning and cracking on my vigina. I am on the nuva ring and have had it out for three days. I usally always start within a day of taking it out or even start bleeding before I take it out. Is brown bleeding a sign of pregnancy?

Answer

XXXXXXXXXX,

Brown discharge typically means old blood that the body is just trying to get rid of, so unless there is a foul odor, this is quite normal. If you were pregnant, you would miss a period and implantation bleeding would occur. Implantation bleeding occurs a bit earlier than expected, and it is scanty, spotty, pinkish and not red and heavy like a period, and does not follow the normal pattern of a period (light to heavy to light). If you feel you may be pregnant, your best bet is to wait at least two weeks after a missed period, and see your doctor for a blood pregnancy test as this is the most accurate way of testing.
