I sold a customer a wire fox terrier. His ears were carried exactly as they should be until overnight at around six months they perked up and haven't returned to normal. Can anything be done about this problem? What caused this? Neither parents has this problem.

Naturally upright ears are a recessive gene in dogs. To get the perfect tipped ears required in many breeds takes the combination of correct ear set, and the gene for upright ears and for down ears in combination, along with good ear leather. Sometimes the genetic combination gives you the right position, the good leather and a pair of genes for up ears. It sounds like the dog's ears tipped only until the teething point was past and the ears had the nutrition they needed to come up. In my experience you cannot force ears to 'naturally' become what the genes don't go along with. However many a breeder weights the ears of the dogs so they tip for the show ring and many more do surgical corrections to force tipping. They can try gluing the ear tips down. This site goes over setting similar ears on Kerry's http://www.kerryblues.info/index.html?http%3A//www.kerryblues.info/HEALTH/SETEARS.HTML you can apply the same principles to doing the fox terrier's ears. Hope this helps you!
