Question

Hello, and thank you for this opportunity for information. Our 15 year old Chocolate Point spayed male cat has been an indoor cat all of his life. He has been very healthy all of his life. Last week he stopped eating and found a comfortable hiding place upstairs. After a week he has started coming downstairs again, always sits on my lap, and drinks a little milk and eats a small amount of dry cat food daily. He is not spending time in the hiding place. He shows absolutely no signs of discomfort. He is urinating but seems to have little or no bowel movements. What would you suggest? Thank youso much !

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Hi and thank you for responding. My cat stopped eating one week ago Saturday, when my brother and wife came to visit. They stayed downstairs and the cat found a hiding place upstairs. This is not usual behavior for the cat. Altho he is not particularly friendly, he almost never goes upstairs and usually stays in his bed or on our couch, both downstairs in the den. Altho he has eaten a little food, it is not more than a teaspoon full. He drinks about 1/4 cup milk from a saucer. Today I tried wet cat food and two types of baby food, but he wouldn't try either one. Thank you again - I hope you can help. Maybe it is just my poor cat's time to die?

Get unflavored pedialyte and give your cat one dropper every ten minutes for an hour. Then water down the baby food and give one dropper every ten minutes for another hour. Make sure it does not contain onion or garlic seasoning.

Sometimes an older cat does not feel well and just needs to be hydrated and then he will eat.

Please get started and let us know how it is going. We will stand by to hear from you.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Thank you so much for your thoughtful answer. I noticed earlier that the cat had some mucus draining from his eye. Now I noticed that he also has a little mucus at his mouth. He is not coughing or sneezing. I went out and bought the pedialite as you suggested and didn't have the heart to stuff a dropper down his throat, so I mixed the pedialite with a little chicken broth. He is drinking it now. Thank you so much. This seems like very helpful advice. I will let you know how it works. THANKS!

Dear friend,

I am happy to help. Your baby most likely has a bad tooth that started this problem. Do not be afraid to feed him with a dropper as he needs nutrition and hydration. Make sure there is no onion or garlic in the broth or baby food. Feed him watered down baby food and pedialyte until he begins to eat on his own.

Please let me know how he is. If you need any further help - I will always be here for you.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
