My '03 Chevy 4500 truck has an instrument cluster

My '03 Chevy 4500 truck has an instrument cluster problem. When truck is first started all gauges work fine, after a couple of minutes tach and oil pressure gauges quit working. I have been told that the whole instrument cluster will have to be replaced. Is this the likely answer or is there something else that I can check?
