Question

I have a chihuahua that has knawed on the area at the base of his tail until he has a bald spot. He has no fleas or ticks. He only goes outside to use the bathroom. Can you help my baby. He is 3 years old. Thank you for your time...Cullen

Answer

Many dogs who chew at that particular spot have allergy to flea saliva. Some of them can be so allergic that 1 bite will make them itch for weeks.

You didn't list flea preventive under "already tried." so I'm going to recommend that you be religious about using it. I would recommend Advantage or Revolution, as these products are safe, easy to use, and very effective.

In addition to treating your dog for fleas, I would also treat the environment. Use a product that will kill adult fleas and eggs. Read the labels and make sure that the product will be safe for your other pets, if you have any.
