Question

Our Akita has been having 'diarrhea' problems for about 10 days. Took him to the Vet.
where blood and fecal tests showed no parasites or other obvious health problems.
He was prescribed 'Flagyl' which we are giving, as prescribed. He has 'always' had a
'non typical canine' approach to food. If he is not 'hungry' he will not eat. No treats that he loves or no food of any kind. He always drinks plenty of fresh cold water (we change it frequently) and he is otherwise healthy and playful.
The problem is this. He had not passed a BM since 4 days and we were concerned he
might be getting constipated. He normally has 1-per-day. Last night he again had diarreha which surprised us. What kind of 'food' do you suggest for him?

More importantly perhaps is "what is your fee range"?

Answer

Hi Lila,
It sounds like you have done the right thing by having your vet run the tests. And Flagyl is usually the first thing the vet will give you. You might try a bland diet such as boiled rice mixed with some boiled chicken. Talk to your doctor about a diet for him or maybe running more tests. Sometimes they will put him on a low dose of Flagyl to keep him regular with a special diet. Hill's, Waltham (Royal Canin)and Eukanuba offer excellent special diets to control something like this. Ask your doctor if he would recommend something like this. Don't let diarrhea go on for days as you did the first time. It is important that you get this under control. I hope this helps. Atleast you'll have more questions for your veterinarian. If he can not resolve the matter ask for a referral to a specialist.
