Question

Painting, Outside Banister, and Problem with Gnats

Sent to General Experts September 22, 2006 3:07 p.m.

I live in Pennsylvania and I have a white wooden banister on my front porch. I have a problem with bugs being attracted to the white banister. I am not sure if it is the wood in the banister or if it could be the paint (I used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint which is Exterior Latex Flat). The problem usually occurs from Spring through Fall which is the warmer weather in Pennsylvania. The problem - the bugs (usually gnats) lay on the white banister, they die, and then the process leaves little black dots (stains). I usually have to use soft scrub and I have to rub to remove the stains. This helps to remove most of the stains from the white banister but sometimes I have to repaint those areas where the staining is bad. I am looking for a solution to the problem. I am hoping the solution is either a paint I can try or something I can put over the paint that may prevent some of the staining from occurring or make it easier to clean up the stains. I thought of maybe applying a clear coat over the paint; however, I was told by Sherwin Williams that the clear coat product they carry is not effective for outside use. Any ideas would be welcomed. Thank you.
