Question
I have a 1 year old rat terrier. In the spring, she developed a red, raised sore on the inside of her right thigh. I thought perhaps she had scratched herself, as it looked similar to an abrasion. Within a few days, more red "bumps" began to appear around the first spot. A trip to the vet ruled out ringworm. The vet said that if there was any hair around the area, she could check for fungus. Instead, she gave us antibiotics and said that if it didn't clear up, we could bring her back. It cleared up, but had now come back for the 3rd time in 6 months. The last time, she also had a red, slightly infected ear. I have been giving her daily supplements for allergies and we bathe her every 1 to 4 weeks, depending on how she is doing. She also scratches at her mouth. The vet said sometimes dogs can have some yeast around their lips, but we can't see anythong. We have also been using malecitic acid wipes on her leg, ears, and mouth. What would cause such a localized, reoccurring skin problem? Just that one spot on her leg! Could it be bacteria or yeast? And how is this treated, longterm? She is too young to have to take antibiotics every 3 months for 15 years.
