Question

I have a 7 year old male cat. I adopted him and his brother about a year ago and when I started having territory issues with the brother, had to give him away to another home- thus separating them. Marbles was fine for a couple months but recently has become terribly needy. Unless I am giving him 100% of my attention, he walks around meowing. I don't know what to do! I cannot afford to get another cat right now so if its a lonliness issue- I am lost. Can you offer me some advice? Are there any other things that could lead to him being so upset all of a sudden? I've noticed an increase in his water intake and a large increase in shedding. Is this a sign of stress?

Please Help me!!

Stephanie

Dear Stephanie,

I do not think your cats problems are directly related to stress although stress can bring on physical illness. I also do not think he is lonely for another cat. It is more likely he is not feeling well and h eis trying to get your attention and communicate his distress. Excessive drinking and shedding are indicative of dehydration. That is usually caused by the kidneys not working perfectly. Do not feed your boy dry food. canned only and add water to that. You want as much fluid as possible to flush his kidneys and bladder. Also give him one daily drop of unsweetened (only) cranberry juice. That will make his bladder inhospitable to UTI bacteria.f he has any problems urinating he may need an antibiotic so keep your eye on him.

Please let me know if you still have questions. I will be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
