Toshiba DVD/VHS recorder

I received a Toshiba DVD/VHS recorder from QVC about 2 mos ago. first, I had so much trouble figuring out WHICH discs to buy to record on (they really should have included at least one for the consumers info). Finally, I got the right ones (I think) DVD RW. These work fine to record on from TV, except it's not as adv, they are NOT as easy as VHS. I've not been able to rerecord on them.
I have spent HOURS trying to get this unit to record from VHS to DVD (my tapes that I recorded on from TV). It will not do it. I don't know if it's me or the unit.

Any suggestions please ? or even how do I contact someone ? The inst booklet does not give a phone #, or website for questions. I was on the Toshiba site, I see nowhere they offer help.
