I'm having a pole garage built 32'X40', The guy that is building it has done a beautiful job and its almost complete and ready for siding. The building has a 6" overhang on all sides. The builder did not close in (with wood) the soffit area, he said that the vinyl siding will cover that. I just think that alot of cold air in the winter will come thru there. He said you need that for ventilation. I said we put in the roof vent across the entire peek., He insists that overhand does not get boxed in with wood. Which I have plenty of? Does he know what he's talking about ? If I make him box it in will I be doing wrong to the construction of the building? I intend to have a woodburner in ther and that seems like too much ventilation if you ask me.I live in Cleveland Ohio and it sure gets cold here in the winter. That just seems like alot of wasted heat. Can you give me the right advise? thankyouXXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Vinyl siding will not close this area unless, as you say, there's something to cover the soffit area. It can be made without closing the soffit but in my opinion it would help only when you wanted to save materials and you don't seem to have such a problem.

Also, if you need any ventilation then you can put vents on the soffit boards anyway, which is again completely your choice.

If you make him close the soffit with wood, vynil or aluminium you are not doing anything wrong.
