Question

How do I know if my EGR valve is defective? My service engine soon lights is coming on intermittently and Auto Zone states that the code is p1401 which is a Exhaust Gas Recirculating Valve sensor. My 1996 Grand Prix is running fine; However, the engine light comes on every other week or so but the light doesn't stay on. Thanks! Ron Hill

I took vehicle to Auto Zone for them to give me the code per the Service Engine Soon Light.

Answer

take a vacuum pump and apply vacuum to the valve with it running, it should stumble or stall out if it is working properly. if not the valve may be bad or the passage may be clogged with carbon.Removal and inspection of the valve would be necessary if this is the case.Otherwise more diagnostics of the electronic end of the circuit that controls egr operation would be needed.
