I am working in a primary school as a classroom assistant and have been assigned a down syndrome child. is it legal to work woth a downs syndrome child with no specialist training?

The is no formal training required to work as a classroom assistant with a Down's syndrome child.
If you think about it, the child's parents who have taken care of this child for years had NO training either.
I would suggest meeting with the parents, and you may get some insight into his needs, patterns of behavior, and personality. I suspect by the end of the year you will look back on this experience as a very positive one.
