Question

I am 74 and have been a diabetic for 45 years. I scraped the back of my leg on the car door a month ago. I don't know how to treat it. I still have a good pulse in both feet so it isn't circulation related but I can't get it to heal. My PCP suggested Hydrocolloid bandages but these just keep it open and it weeps. I have used an antibiotic ointment with a plain bandaid and that does the same. It will scab over if I keep it uncovered and rinse it hydrogen peroxide twice a day but it just deosn't seem to be healing.....closing up! Does anyone have any idea what I can do to heal this wound up? My ankle is swollen but no red streaks or heat

Answer

You may have the tiny capillary arterial vessels clogged because of diabetes. That makes it harder to heal. Another way saying it you may have good pulsese on both feet but the pulses on the tiny vessels probably are gone because of diabetes and no good blood flow at issue level. So i suggest to you see a Vascular Surgeon and get the scraped hill as soon as possible. You may also need to take antibiotic by mouth to make the scrape heal fast. There is always risk that you loose control , infection get worse and you end up loosing your leg.

Hi,

I suggest to you to go to an Emergency Room and have the Emergency Room Physician see the wound. He or she can tell you how to take care of this wound until you see a Vascular Surgeon. You may need to be put on an oral antibiotic .
