Question

I have two chow chows (a male and female). The female is now 2 years old and in her breeding heat cycle. Both chows are very very friendly. The female will mount the male at this time but will not allow him to mount her yet. She has been in her cycle for approx two weeks. When he tries to mount her she growls and becomes aggressive he backs away and often comes to me whining.

Will she allow him to breed if he does not become more aggresive with her? If she is trying to mount him does that signal she is ready?

Optional Information

Answer

The typical heat cycle last for three weeks or twenty one days.

The first stage is called the proestrus stage and last from 4 to 9 days. During this time you will see a bloody discharge.

The second stage is called the estrus stage and last from 4 to 13 days. During this stage the discharge will be more yellowish in color. This is the prime time for mating. She will allow any and all males to approach her and will do what is called "flagging". Flagging is moving her tail up and to one side to allow the male to mount her.

She should be in or close to being in the estrus stage. Look for the yellowish discharge and her vaginal area should be swollen. If she is ready she will allow him to mount her and should even back her rear end into him. Do not force it if she is not ready, this may make the male shy away from her when she does become ready.
