cannot describe it any better.
Sent to General Experts August 26 01:40 AM

I found a very hard round green fruit(?) that looks like a green apple, but is very hard. Inside is a seed or nut that is the size of a walnut, but darker and spikey. I could not break this with a metal meat cleaver or heavy tenderizer. I could not find it under any fruit or nut listed. Cn anyone tell me what it might be?

It's a walnut with it's hull. Does it look like this?

Reply to Jeopard's Post: This doesn't look as round and shiny as the one we found-also the nut(?) inside is very hard-almost impossible to open or break and is prickly. Are there black walnut trees in Philadelphia area? I am not sure from your picture that this is a black walnut. Can you give me more information?

The picture shows the rough ones. If memory serves me, the smoother and shinier, the less ripe.

Reply to Jeopard's Post: This nut is covered with a very hard shell with spikes all over. It cannot be opened or smashed with a metal meat tenderizer. Except for the size and shape, I cannot believe it is a walnut. Do walnuts have an extra hard spiky covering??

Hmmm... if it's spikey, it's probably different.

Reply to Jeopard's Post: It also does not stain the hands, which I understand walnuts do. No one seems able to tell me what this is. Any more suggestions?

Relist: I still need help.
I did not get an acceptable answer. The responder tried to answer, but he could not really explain what the object was that I was questioning. I do not accept his suggestion because it does not really fit and I cannot send a picture because I do not have a camera or scanner and the object has deteriorated so much.
