There a several ways to perform this function.

First, if your cable box has RF or Coaxial input and output only, you will need to purchase a cable splitter that you place before the cable box. The splitter has one input and two outputs. You would disconnect the cable from your cable box, and connect it to the input of the splitter. Then, connect a length of coax between one of the outputs on the splitter to the input on the cable box. Next, connect a length of coax from the second output of the splitter to the input of the DVR. This system works especially well if you have multiple inputs on your television or monitor. If not, you will want a switchable splitter.

If your cable box has coax and RCA outputs, you could use the coax output to connect to the coax connector on the television, and use the RCA audio and video jacks to connect to the DVR.

You could also use the "pass through" function of the DVR and connect directly from the cable box to the DVR, then from the DVR to the TV.
