Question

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder. When towing small trailer when outside temperature is 90 degrees plus after 30 minutes driving there is a noise like a rattle timed with the engine rpm coming from the rear of the engine. It will stop if the engine is shut down for a few minutes. Installed transmission cooler. Did not help.

What is the engine temp doing when this happens?

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: The engine is fine and is at normal temperature. We thought it was the vibration of an aluminum sheild over the exhaust system but we secured it and it still happens.

Answer

If that's the area the sound is coming from, it's likely a bad catalytic converter.

From under the car, give the converter a good pound with the heel of your hand and listen for a rattle. If it does, the converter is bad.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: The sound is not coming from that far back in the system. I pounded the converter but it is not making any noise nor is the exhaust system loose. This sound is coming from the rear of the engine or the area where the engine and transmission comes together. It sounds like the noise made when a water pump bearing goes bad. But it only occurs when towing in hot weather rarely when I hit passing gear or step down out of over drive. My mechanic beleives it is only a clearance problem but if this was the case it would have eventually releived itself.

Answer

It's nearly impossible to translate someone else's description of a sound and it's location into reality.

You could have a problem with the flex plate/flywheel, an internal engine problem, exhaust problem. I really have to hear the sound to be able to pinpoint anything.
