What medications are you currently taking?

Have you been prescribed this medication by a doctor?

If not, it is an old prescription? How old?

What symptoms do you have that you want to help by taking Vicodin?

Reply to James's Post: Hello and thanks for your help. ACtually this inquiry is regarding my cousin so it took me a few days to get the information on his meds. My cousin experiences migraine head-aches therefore takes vicodin to ease the pain. The vicodin (which is a current prescription)is prescribed to his wife who has chronic back problems from a slipped disk. The meds that my cousin takes for his diabetes are the following: Avandia, Lipitor, Glyburide, Lisinopril and Precose. Thanks again for you help

Answer

Cindy,
Unfortunately I can't advocate taking the Vicodin unless it is prescribed by a doctor and here are some good reasons. Vicodin causes a depression of the nervous system resulting in low heart rate and drowsiness. Taking Vicodin along with these medications can decrease or increase their individual effects and can cause increased drowsiness and addiction. I recommend that your cousin see a doctor for proper prescription treatment. There are numerous drugs out there that can work for migraines and some can even prevent them. If this answer helps please hit the accept button. Thank you.

Reply to James's Post: hi,
As I appreciate your feedback I was wondering if you would be able to address my originaly question which was- Is vicodin a drug that could be harmful when combined with the drugs I listed in my previous e-mail?
thanks
Cindy

Answer

The Lisinopril and Avandria both will cause drowsiness. Taking Vicodin with these medications will increase this effect. Also, if the blood sugar is low for some reason, this will make him very drowsy and along with these medications and the Vicodin, this will increase the effects to dangerous levels. The other medications appear to be fine. Narcotics are rarely given for migraines. Your cousin needs to be seen by a doctor for these so he can be properly treated. Also, most of the medications he is taking will cause headaches that may trigger a migraine. He may need to have certain medications changed to prevent this.
