A lot depends on what you plan to start with for breeding stock (pups or adults, good quality dogs or just anything you can get etc.), the type of care and feeding you intend to, whether you will do some of the vet type care or not, if you plan to sell pups retail to the public or wholesale to brokers, where you live for costs of advertising or kennel licensing etc.

I usually plan on having a couple thousand in the bank to get a litter on the ground.
If you plan to raise pups for wholesale market then you will also have to have kennels and runs and cleaning and food preparation facilities and a USDA licence.
