Hello,
To become a courier who ensures that international express mail or supplies are delivered safely overseas. The courier may take only one piece of carry-on luggage; in exchange, he or she pays a mere fraction of the regular air fare. To find companies that hire couriers, look at Kelly Monaghan's Air Courier Bargains. Check also The Courier Air Travel Handbook by Mark Fields. A courier is most often allowed to spend only a week or two overseas. He or she must agree to fly over and return on the dates when the courier company needs someone. Most flights to Europe leave from the East Coast (most from JFK or Newark), and flights to Asia from the West Coast, although there are some from Chicago.

do you know of anyone that has done this? Are there any major pitfalls or scams I should look out for?

My son tried it, it was not really a scam, but it just didn't pan out like he had hoped. He found that there are too many people wanting to do this and not enough jobs. He did one trip which had him go from NY to Berlin. He no sonner got there and had to return right back .
He and his buddies found the cheapest way to travel was on cargo ships.
