Question

My cat, Casper,6 yold male, has a problem with his left eye. He has been treated with terramycin for a cloged tear duct. He has shown some improvement. His eye is still bothering him and appears to have red spots on the lower part of the second eye lid. He tries to scratch the eye and also grooms the eye. Thanks for your help. Ed Sopp

Hi Ed,

How much improvement has Casper shown?
Are you still seeing black gunk on his face or it that mostly gone?
Is his eye tearing a lot?

Answer

Dear Ed,

Since Casper has been on the Terramycin for a few weeks with little or no improvement - he may haave conjunctivits or a bacterial infection of his eye. What started out as a clogged tear duct may have mutated into something we ca now treat with oral antibiotics. Get Casper a round of Clavamox from your vet and give him that for two weeks. You may want to also use a stronge eye ointment to clear this up once and for all. If he is trying to scratch - it means he has an irritatation. We want to quickly geyt a handle on this so Casper cannot accidentally injure his eye by scratching.

Please let me know what the vet says and how Casper is doing after he finishes the clavamox.

If you need anything - just let me know - I will always be there for you and Casper.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

Ed,

It sound like Casper developed a bacterial infection and needs pral antibiotics. When you use a tube like terramycin over and over bacteria can form inside. He should really see the vet o n saturday like you have planned. In the meantime apply a fresh damp teabag 3 or 4 times a day. Make sure to use a freash one.

Let me know what the vet says.

Thanks,

Terr

Casper is doing better and he saw the vet today.
He does have an eye infection. She did Stain the eye to check for any scratches. None present.
Treatment: continue with terramycin, give 200-500mg of Lysine twice daily. This helps to reduce the duration and recurrence of herpes virus URT infections.
Watch for any green or yellow occular or nasal discharge.
Thanks again, Terri, for your help and your convern.
Ed
