Not a Legal Question?
Question
I am 18 years old and I have a lock on my door. I live with my mom and I pay rent. She says I am not allowed to have my door locked when I am in the room with my 17 year old girlfriend. My girlfreinds mom says she doesn't care. So, am I allowed to have a lock on my door/ locked with me in it?
Thanks

Answer
You need to look at it this way. Your living in her home not yours. She owns the home and not you. I can understand your need for privacy but not a locked door. She is just wanting to make sure that your able to get out easy in case of an emergency or she can get to you if she needs you. I would just ask her to show you the courtesy of knocking on the door and waiting for a "come in" before proceeding into your room. When gone she should also provide the right to you and your privacy by not going in the room unless to do things that she would need to do such as pick up or clean. I would assume though that you would do this. Work together and you can find a compromise.
